Why Families in Aldridge Choose 11 Plus Tuition

For many families in Aldridge, the decision to start 11 Plus preparation comes after learning how competitive admissions to Queen Mary’s Grammar School and Queen Mary’s High School are. They often look for tuition tailored to the Walsall entrance test because:

1-round
Their child is bright and motivated but is not yet consistently achieving the standard needed for Queen Mary’s Grammar School or Queen Mary’s High School in timed practice papers.
2-round
Verbal Reasoning question types such as analogies, letter sequences, hidden words and coding exercises are unfamiliar because they are not taught as part of the primary school curriculum.
3-round
Non-Verbal Reasoning feels challenging, with shape sequences, matrices and spatial transformations requiring visual reasoning skills rather than subject knowledge.
4-round
Although their child performs well in school Maths, the speed, accuracy and problem-solving required in the Numerical Reasoning multiple-choice test prove much more demanding.
5-round
They are unsure how the Walsall Grammar School entrance test differs from the Birmingham 11 Plus and whether preparation should include English comprehension or focus on Verbal, Non-Verbal and Numerical Reasoning.
6-round
They want a clear, structured preparation plan across Years 3, 4 and 5 that steadily develops the skills and confidence needed for all three sections of the Walsall entrance test before the Year 6 September exam.
Why Families in High Wycombe Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Aldridge Families

The Metropolitan Borough of Walsall is home to two Outstanding Grammar Schools: Queen Mary’s Grammar School for boys and Queen Mary’s High School for girls, both located in Walsall, just a short distance from Aldridge. In a purely score-based admissions system, thorough preparation is one of the most important steps a family can take.

Aldridge families targeting selective education apply to Queen Mary’s Grammar School, a selective academy for boys, with a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 180 Year 7 places. Girls can apply to Queen Mary’s High School, a selective school which selects its entire intake (for all years) based on academic ability. The Governors have resolved that the maximum number of pupils to be admitted to Year 7 is 150.

Admission to both schools is based entirely on the results of the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test, set by GL Assessment. Children must achieve the qualifying score to be eligible for consideration. Where more qualifying candidates apply than places are available, the school applies its oversubscription criteria.

The West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test covers three areas: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning across two multiple-choice papers of approximately 50 minutes each, set by GL Assessment. There is no separate English comprehension or creative writing element in the Walsall test, a key difference from the Birmingham Grammar School test. If families wish to share results with Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Warwickshire or Shropshire Grammar Schools, they must opt in at the time of registration.

Because Grammar School places are awarded purely on performance, with no catchment priority and applicants coming from across the West Midlands, many Aldridge families seek expert 11 Plus support well in advance.

How an Aldridge Student Prepared for the Walsall 11 Plus

inverted-comma

Strong classroom performance does not always translate into success in the 11 Plus. That was the case for one of our Year 4 students from Aldridge, whose initial assessment showed excellent academic potential but no experience of Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning, which are rarely taught in local primary schools. Over 18 months of structured preparation, including weekly live lessons, twice-weekly practice and progressively timed mock papers, the pupil developed the confidence and exam techniques needed for the 11 Plus Exam.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

GL Assessment’s Verbal Reasoning paper for the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test assesses children’s ability to solve language-based reasoning problems rather than recalling classroom knowledge. Questions may involve word analogies, letter sequences, hidden words, code substitution, vocabulary links and deductive reasoning, all of which require specialist preparation. Our tutors teach these skills through a carefully structured programme that develops understanding first before focusing on speed and exam confidence. Explore our full 11 Plus Preparation programme to find out more.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

The West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test includes Non-Verbal Reasoning questions throughout both GL Assessment papers. Children are tested on their ability to identify visual patterns, solve matrix problems, recognise rotations and reflections, and complete spatial transformations using logical thinking rather than classroom knowledge. As these question types are unfamiliar to most primary school pupils, our tutors teach them through a carefully structured programme that builds confidence, precision and efficient exam technique.
