Why Families in Boroughbridge Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Parents across Boroughbridge and the surrounding villages often seek structured support once they recognise the specific demands of North Yorkshire Grammar School entry. The most common situations we hear from families are the following:

1-round
A child is motivated and capable in school, but practice papers reveal gaps in speed or accuracy that could affect their final score.
2-round
In Mathematics, the child handles everyday classroom topics comfortably but loses marks on multi-step problems.
3-round
In English, the child reads confidently but finds it difficult to answer inference-based comprehension questions accurately.
4-round
In Verbal Reasoning, the child has not yet encountered the code patterns, word relationships and analogy questions that appear regularly in Grammar School assessments but almost never in primary school lessons.
5-round
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, the child finds it hard to identify rules and relationships in visual sequences and shape-based questions without specific, guided practice.
6-round
The family wants to plan preparation across Years 3, 4 and 5 in a sensible, structured way, covering all four subjects without unnecessary pressure or last-minute cramming.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Boroughbridge Families

Many families in Boroughbridge consider Ripon Grammar School, which attracts applicants from across North Yorkshire. As the school has a limited number of Year 7 places, competition is high and small differences in performance can affect a child’s final ranking.

Entry is based on the GL Assessment entrance test, consisting of one Verbal Reasoning paper and one Non-Verbal Reasoning paper. Pupils are ranked using their combined age-standardised score rather than assessed against a fixed pass mark. Ripon Grammar School’s entrance test is arranged directly by North Yorkshire Council.

Ripon Grammar School does not publish a guaranteed qualifying score.  Pupils with the highest test scores are offered places. The cut-off score for 2026 entry is 203, up from 196 in 2025 and 195 in 2024.

Year 7 places are limited. Ripon Grammar School has a published admission number of 117 places, including 14 boarding places. When more pupils qualify than there are places available, offers are made according to the school’s published admissions and oversubscription criteria, including catchment area, sibling priority and distance from the school.

Because Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning are not taught extensively in most primary schools, starting preparation in Year 3 or Year 4 gives Boroughbridge pupils time to develop the skills, confidence and exam technique needed before sitting the GL Assessment test.

Students We Support for the 11 Plus in Boroughbridge

We teach pupils from Boroughbridge itself and the surrounding villages, including Embsay, Gargrave, and Grassington, which lie in the BD postcode area. Many of our students attend schools such as Boroughbridge Primary School, Kirby Hill Church of England Primary School and others.

We also support families a little further afield across North Yorkshire, including Ripon, Settle and Skipton through the same online 11 Plus programme.

Most pupils we work with, across Years 3 to 5, are preparing specifically for a place at Ripon Grammar School.

North Yorkshire Council publishes current guidance on registration deadlines and the entrance test process, and this is worth checking directly, since exact dates are confirmed each year separately. Families should register early if they live outside Ripon Grammar’s catchment area, as this affects how the application is handled.

We also help students aiming for a Grammar School place at a later stage than the usual Year 7 entry, offering structured support for 12 Plus and 13 Plus exams.

How Our 11 Plus Tuition Supported a Boroughbridge Pupil

inverted-comma

A Boroughbridge pupil joined us in Year 4 after an initial assessment showed good reasoning skills but difficulty completing Non-Verbal Reasoning questions within the time allowed. A personalised learning plan, regular timed practice papers, mock exams and weekly one-to-one lessons gradually improved speed, accuracy and confidence. By the time the GL Assessment entrance test arrived, the pupil was much more familiar with the question styles, time limits and overall exam format.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

Although Ripon Grammar’s own entrance test doesn’t include a separate Maths paper, strong number skills support reasoning performance across the board. We build fluency in number work, fractions, ratios and basic algebra, so pupils approach numerical reasoning questions with confidence and speed rather than hesitation.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

Strong reading and vocabulary skills are essential for success in the GL Assessment. Our English lessons develop comprehension, inference, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms and word roots, helping pupils read, understand and answer Verbal Reasoning questions with greater accuracy and confidence.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Since Verbal Reasoning is one of the two papers that actually decide entry to Ripon Grammar, this is where preparation counts most. Lessons work through coded sequences, analogies, hidden words and letter-based logic puzzles, building up both accuracy and the speed needed to complete a 50-minute paper comfortably.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

The Non-Verbal Reasoning paper carries equal weight to Verbal Reasoning in the Ripon Grammar test, and its four timed sections reward pupils who can spot a pattern quickly. We work through shape sequences, rotations, reflections and matrix-style questions, gradually building the speed and confidence needed to handle each section within its time limit.

Is there a pass mark for the 11 Plus test in Boroughbridge?

There is no single fixed pass mark for the 11 Plus test in Boroughbridge or the wider North Yorkshire area. Instead, Grammar Schools like nearby Ripon Grammar School use age-standardised scores and rank applicants based on yearly cohort performance.

How is the Ripon Grammar School 11 Plus exam structured?
