Families in Charlton Kings live close to Pate’s Grammar School, which is regularly ranked among the top state schools in England. However, living nearby does not help with admissions. All Year 7 places go to the children who score highest on the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test, no matter where they live. We help Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 children in the GL53 area prepare for this test with real confidence. All seven grammar schools in Gloucestershire use the same entrance test. Families only need to register once, attend one test day in September, and send the result to any of the schools they are interested in.

All our lessons are live and online, so children in Charlton Kings can prepare from home. There is no need to travel, and families can easily fit lessons around school and home life.

Why Families in Charlton Kings Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Getting into a Gloucestershire Grammar School can be tough. Here are the main reasons families in Charlton Kings come to us for help:

1-round
A bright child may do well in primary school but struggle with practice papers at home. Their scores might be lower than what Grammar Schools expect.
2-round
In Maths, the child may keep up with classwork but find numerical reasoning questions difficult. These questions require careful reading and additional steps that aren’t covered in regular lessons.
3-round
In Verbal Reasoning, the child may not understand word codes, letter sequences, analogies, or logic questions. This can make the format confusing without practice.
4-round
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, the child may look at shape-and-pattern questions and not have a clear way to solve them. Problems involving rotation, reflection, and matrices can feel challenging without a method.
5-round
Parents know the registration window for the test is short. It opens on May 18 and closes on June 26, 2026. They want their child to start preparing well before then.
6-round
Families want an experienced tutor who builds skills across all three areas of the test. They prefer someone who guides learning rather than just handing out practice papers.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Charlton Kings Families

Charlton Kings’ families are fortunate to live so close to Pate’s. However, getting a place is just as competitive as at any other school in England, and the test includes question types that children do not learn in primary school.

The Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test is a shared exam for all seven grammar schools in the county. For September 2027 entry, registration is open from 12 noon on 18 May 2026 until 12 noon on 26 June 2026. The test will be held on 12 September 2026, with results available in mid-October. The Common Application Form must be submitted to Gloucestershire County Council by 31 October 2026.

Pate’s Grammar School is a co-educational selective school that welcomes 150 new Year 7 students, chosen through the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test. Registration usually starts in May of Year 5, and the exam is held the next September in Year 6. The test covers verbal ability, numerical reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning, and competition for places is strong.

The test uses GL Assessment and consists of two papers, each lasting 45 to 50 minutes, covering Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and Maths. Scores are age-standardised, so younger children are not disadvantaged. There is no fixed pass mark; students are ranked, and the top scorers qualify. Gloucestershire’s grammar schools will switch to a new test provider, FSCE, for September 2028, but the GL Assessment will apply unchanged for the 2026 test.

This is why families in Charlton Kings who want a Grammar School place begin preparing early and focus on all three subject areas from Year 3 or Year 4.

Students We Support for the 11 Plus in Charlton Kings

We also support families from other parts of Gloucestershire, such as Prestbury and Cirencester, with our fully online programme. We help children who go to local primary schools, including Charlton Kings Junior School and Charlton Kings Infants’ School.

We work with children in Charlton Kings and nearby areas, including Cheltenham, Bishop’s Cleeve, Tewkesbury, and Winchcombe, all in or near the GL52 postcode.

Most of the children who join us are in Years 3, 4, or 5. Many families in Charlton Kings aim for Pate’s Grammar School as their top choice, along with one or more of the other six Gloucestershire grammar schools.

If you live outside Gloucestershire, you need to apply through your local authority’s Common Application Form process. Be sure to check the Gloucestershire County Council admissions guidance and each school’s website for the latest information.

We also provide 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition for families considering grammar school entry at a later stage.

A Charlton Kings Student Who Took Nothing for Granted

inverted-comma

This girl from Charlton Kings used to see Pate’s Grammar School every morning from the bus and set her sights on going there. When she joined us in Year 4, she was doing well in class but had never come across Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning questions before. Her Maths was strong, but her reasoning scores were holding her back in practice tests. With weekly lessons, regular homework, and a steady build-up of timed mock exams in all three areas, she gained the speed, accuracy, and consistency needed for the Gloucestershire test. She no longer left her grammar school place to chance.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

The Gloucestershire test includes Maths questions in a numerical reasoning format across both papers. Children need to read problems carefully and solve them quickly. Our Maths sessions cover important topics like number, fractions, decimals, ratio, algebra, geometry, and data handling. We focus on building reasoning skills and speed. Each session also includes answer checking and time management, which are crucial for doing well in a test where every mark counts.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

The Gloucestershire test includes verbal reasoning questions that aren’t typically found in primary school. We introduce types like letter sequences, word codes, analogies, synonyms, antonyms, hidden words, and logic problems, building understanding before adding time pressure. By the test day, these question types feel familiar and manageable.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning tests a child’s ability to think visually and logically using shapes. Since many children haven’t learned this, we simplify it into clear steps. We guide them to analyse how shapes are rotating, reflecting, or changing and apply that understanding to new examples. This approach helps children improve quickly.
