Why Families in Farnborough Choose 11 Plus Tuition
Grammar School places in Bromley are among the most competed-for in south London, and Farnborough parents often contact us once they understand exactly how demanding both entrance tests are. The same concerns tend to come up:

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Farnborough Families
Bromley is home to just two state Grammar Schools, both located in nearby Orpington and both highly sought after. Unlike boroughs with a shared consortium test, each school sets and runs its own independent admissions process through Bromley Council’s secondary school places process.
Newstead Wood School offers 168 Year 7 places for girls and is consistently oversubscribed. The selection test consists of two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers in Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, each lasting approximately 50-60 minutes.
St Olave’s Grammar School offers 128 Year 7 places for boys through a two‑stage process. Stage 1 is the school’s own Selective Eligibility Test (SET), a one-hour, multiple-choice test covering English, Maths, VR and NVR, sat on 18 September 2026. The top 450 candidates are invited to Stage 2 on 13 November 2026, where two one-hour written papers in English and Maths are sat. There is no faith requirement and no catchment area; distance is used only as a tiebreaker.
Newstead Wood requires a qualifying score of 210 on its GL Assessment papers. St Olave’s does not publish a fixed pass mark for Stage 1; only the top 450 boys nationally proceed to Stage 2, and final offers are based on combined Stage 1 and Stage 2 scores. Both schools apply their own oversubscription criteria once the selective standard is met, with applications submitted through the Bromley Council secondary school places process.
With two of London’s most selective state schools on the doorstep and very different test formats to master, most Farnborough families find that early, structured preparation makes a real difference.

St Olave’s Grammar School registration has now closed, with the Stage 1 SET on 18 September 2026, results in mid-October and Stage 2 on 13 November 2026. The common application form deadline for Bromley is 31 October 2026. Always confirm current dates directly with each school.
We also offer 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition for Farnborough families planning a later route into Grammar School entry.

A Farnborough Student’s Progress in 11 Plus Preparation
When a Farnborough student joined us at the start of Year 4, she was confident in Maths but had no exposure to Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning. Eighteen months of structured weekly lessons, timed practice, and feedback helped her build the skills and confidence required for Newstead Wood’s GL Assessment papers.

11 Plus Maths
Our Maths sessions focus on the kind of reasoning-based, multi-step problem-solving that St Olave’s Stage 2 demands, rather than straightforward curriculum recall. Pupils strengthen numerical reasoning, early algebra, geometry and data interpretation in a sequence that builds confidence and speed under strict time limits.

11 Plus English
English at St Olave’s Stage 2 covers close reading, inference, creative writing and structured analytical responses — so our lessons go well beyond standard comprehension exercises. Pupils practise extended written responses alongside vocabulary, spelling and punctuation, building the fluency and accuracy the Stage 2 paper rewards.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning makes up half of Newstead Wood’s entrance test and a section of St Olave’s SET, so we treat it as a central focus. Pupils work through analogies, sequences, code-breaking and word-relationship questions in a sequence that builds pattern recognition, then layer in timed practice to sharpen exam speed.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning
Non-Verbal Reasoning forms the other half of the Newstead Wood test and appears in the St Olave’s SET. We guide pupils steadily through shape sequences, rule-spotting, rotations, reflections and matrix puzzles until what once felt unpredictable becomes a method they can apply with confidence.
How Our 11 Plus Tuition Plan Works for Farnborough Families
Thorough 11 Plus preparation matters more in Bromley than in many areas, because families may need to prepare for two different test formats at once. Here’s what Farnborough families can expect:
Every lesson is shaped around the specific test format at your child’s target school, GL Assessment papers for Newstead Wood, or the school’s own SET and Stage 2 format for St Olave’s.
