Why Early Preparation Makes a Difference for Great Barr Pupils

Beginning preparation well before Year 6 allows children to improve steadily without unnecessary pressure. Starting in Year 3 or Year 4 gives pupils time to strengthen core academic skills while becoming increasingly familiar with the format and expectations of Birmingham’s 11 Plus examinations.

The West Midlands 11 Plus, produced by GL Assessment, consists of two multiple-choice papers lasting around 50–60 minutes each, including instructions. The assessment covers English Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics, and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning, with no written composition. Results are calculated using age-standardised scores, with 50% weighting for English and Verbal Reasoning, 25% for Mathematics, and 25% for Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning.

For Year 7 admissions in September 2027, the Published Admission Number (PAN) is 192 for Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School and 140 for King Edward VI Aston School.

Children in Year 5 who wish to apply for a Birmingham Grammar School must complete the online test registration during the published application period. Parents should consult the Birmingham Grammar Schools Admissions Timetable to ensure all registration and application deadlines are met.

As places are highly competitive, consistent long-term preparation helps pupils approach the entrance assessment with stronger knowledge, greater confidence and refined examination techniques.
