Why Families in Hazlemere Choose 11 Plus Tuition

As Grammar School places in Buckinghamshire grow scarcer each year, more families in Hazlemere seek out 11 Plus support. Their journeys often begin with one of these all-too-familiar moments:

1-round
A bright, determined child pours their heart into every attempt, yet their practice scores stubbornly linger just below the qualifying mark.
2-round
In Maths, the child grasps lessons in class, but when the clock is ticking, tricky multi-step problems, fractions, ratios and word puzzles seem to slip through their fingers, costing precious marks.
3-round
In English, fluent reading feels natural, but when exam nerves set in, comprehension, structured writing and finding the perfect word suddenly seem just out of reach.
4-round
In Verbal Reasoning, code sequences, letter patterns and analogy questions appear as if written in a foreign language, rarely glimpsed in everyday schoolwork.
5-round
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, spatial puzzles and diagram patterns stay locked mysteries, waiting for targeted practice to reveal their secrets.
6-round
Families weigh Hazlemere’s local non-selective schools, like Sir William Ramsay, against the dream of a Grammar School place, hoping to open real choices for their child in Year 7.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Hazlemere
Families

Buckinghamshire stands out as one of the last fully selective counties in England, making entry to Grammar Schools a crucial gateway for Hazlemere children seeking selective secondary education. With fierce competition, careful preparation can make all the difference.

To qualify, children need to get a standardised Secondary Transfer Test score (STT) of 121 or above, and about 37% of students reach this score. In Buckinghamshire, higher scores do not give extra priority. Grammar Schools only use 121 as the qualifying mark, not for ranking.

The Wycombe High School Admission Policy 2027 sets the Published Admission Number (PAN) for Year 7 at 192. Girls may be considered for admission if they achieve a qualifying score of 121 in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT), are deemed qualified by a Selection Review Panel, or meet other specified criteria. The Royal Grammar School offers 182 day places and 10 boarding places for Year 7, with a required qualifying score of 121 in the STT.

Each test paper runs for about 60 minutes, including time for introductions and practice questions. The Secondary Transfer Test (STT) challenges students across verbal, non-verbal, and maths skills. Before listing a Grammar School on the Common Application Form, families should carefully explore each school’s admissions policy.

Given these pressures and the intense competition for a handful of Year 7 places, it is no wonder that many Hazlemere families start structured 11 Plus tuition early and turn to expert guidance.

A Hazlemere Family’s 11 Plus Preparation Story

inverted-comma

A Hazlemere student began his journey in Year 3, living only a stone’s throw from the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, yet fully aware that being nearby was no guarantee of admission. Early assessments revealed a naturally inquisitive mind, though Non-Verbal Reasoning felt like uncharted territory and lengthy Maths questions often ate up precious exam minutes. Over two years of lively weekly lessons, purposeful homework, and challenging mock exams, he steadily built the skills, speed, and self-assurance needed to approach the Secondary Transfer Test with true confidence, earning his place through determination rather than geography.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

Our Maths sessions focus on problem-solving and exam strategies, rather than repetitive drills. Students systematically develop skills in number problems, algebraic reasoning, geometry and data interpretation. We also teach exam techniques, including showing all working and checking answers, to help minimise errors under time constraints.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

Students preparing for the Buckinghamshire GL Assessment require strong comprehension, vocabulary and writing accuracy. Our online 11 Plus English lessons develop reading techniques, inference skills, spelling, punctuation and structured writing. We strengthen vocabulary through work with synonyms, antonyms, prefixes and root words, building confidence for timed exam sections.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning preparation develops logical thinking and recognition of language patterns found in GL Assessment papers. Guided practice helps students approach analogies, letter sequences, code-breaking, word relationships and logic-based questions with greater accuracy and speed. Timed exercises and regular practice papers build confidence for real exam conditions.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Many children initially find Non-Verbal Reasoning challenging, as it relies on visual logic rather than traditional school learning. Lessons focus on interpreting shapes, identifying rules, understanding spatial relationships and solving visual sequences. Through guided practice with rotations, reflections, codes, matrices and pattern transformations, students build confidence over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides online 11 Plus tuition in Hazlemere, Buckinghamshire?

Adnan Khan Tutoring provides live online 11 Plus lessons for children in Years 3, 4, and 5. These sessions help students get ready for the GL Assessment Secondary Transfer Test.

Does living in Hazlemere help with admission to Royal Grammar School High Wycombe?

Not always. There are no set catchment areas, but living close to the school can help if places are limited and distance is used to decide who gets in.

How is the Buckinghamshire 11 Plus structured?

The test has two GL Assessment papers, each lasting 60 minutes, including instructions. Paper 1 covers verbal skills, while Paper 2 focuses on maths and non-verbal skills.

Does a qualifying score guarantee a place at a nearby Grammar School?

No. Scoring 121 or higher means your child can be considered for a Buckinghamshire Grammar School, but each school has its own rules for admissions and may use extra criteria if there are too many applicants.

When should my child start 11 Plus tuition in Hazlemere?

We suggest beginning in Year 3 or Year 4. This gives enough time to cover all the main 11 Plus topics, including Maths, English (vocabulary and comprehension), Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Is online 11 Plus tuition effective for Grammar School preparation?

Yes. Live online lessons with clear teaching, screen sharing, and instant feedback work very well. With homework and timed practice, students get full exam preparation without having to travel.

Do you run 11 Plus mock exams?

Yes. We offer full-length timed mock exams that follow the GL Assessment format. These help students improve their exam technique, manage their time, and feel comfortable in real test conditions.
