Hoo St Werburgh is a growing community on the Hoo Peninsula in Medway, and grammar school entry here differs from that in most of Kent. Children in ME3 take the Medway Test instead of the Kent Test, which lets them apply to all six Medway grammar schools with just one exam. The nearest grammar schools are Rochester Grammar School and Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, both in Rochester and only a short drive from Hoo. Families here only need to register for the Medway Test, as one result is valid for every Medway grammar school application. Registration for the Medway Test closed on Friday 12 June 2026. Children who attend Medway primary schools take the test at their own school in mid-September. Results are released on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, and the Common Application Form must be sent to Medway Council by 31 October 2026.
More children pass the Medway Test than there are spots at the six Medway grammar schools. About 3,800 take the test, but only around 1,300 places are available. Passing the test does not guarantee admission. The schools use distance from the school as the main factor to decide who gets in, and sometimes a few hundred meters can make a difference.
Because competition is so strong, Hoo families who are serious about grammar school usually begin preparing long before the test registration opens.
