A clear, tailored learning plan for Buckinghamshire 11 Plus success

Ivybridge families have a fantastic opportunity when it comes to Grammar School options. With Plymouth’s three selective schools just a quick trip up the A38, students can take advantage of a unified entrance test that grants access to all three institutions: Devonport High School for Boys, Devonport High School for Girls, and Plymouth High School for Girls. Starting in September 2026, these schools will all adopt Quest Assessments for their entrance exams, which will encompass English and Maths. Additionally, Devonport High School for Boys will require a school-set English writing paper.

We provide tailored support for Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 children in Ivybridge who are preparing for entry into Plymouth grammar schools. Our live online lessons mean that families can save on travel time, allowing students to focus on their studies from the comfort of home while balancing their busy schedules.

Why Families in Ivybridge Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Many families in Ivybridge start thinking about grammar school preparation early. Here are some of the reasons parents in PL21 reach out to us:

1-round
Some children do well at primary school but have never tried a timed Quest Assessments paper, so they are unsure if their level matches what Plymouth grammar schools look for.
2-round
In Maths, a child might feel confident with classwork but struggle with reasoning-style questions. These are longer and more complex than usual school Maths and can be tough to answer quickly.
3-round
For English reading, a child may understand what they read at home but give short or unclear answers to comprehension questions, especially when asked for evidence or detailed explanations.
4-round
In English writing, a child might enjoy writing at school but has never written a timed, structured piece in response to a prompt. This is the type of writing Devonport High School for Boys tests in its own writing paper.
5-round
Parents are unsure which schools to target, how the Plymouth test system works across two separate test dates, and how to sensibly plan preparation across Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5.
6-round
Families want expert-led online 11 Plus tuition for their Ivybridge child, rather than just workbooks and practice papers to do alone.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Ivybridge Families

Plymouth grammar schools do not have a catchment area. Admission is based only on test results, so children from Ivybridge have the same chance as those from anywhere in Devon or beyond.

Starting in September 2026, all Plymouth Grammar Schools will use Quest Assessments. The entrance tests take place over two Saturdays: Paper 1 on 12 September 2026 and Paper 2 on 19 September 2026. Children who apply to more than one Plymouth grammar school only need to take the tests once. Results are emailed in mid-October 2026. Families then list their preferred schools on the Common Application Form, which must be sent to their local authority by 31 October 2026.

Devonport High School for Boys has 180 Year 7 places. Students take three tests: an English reading test, a Maths test, and a school-set writing test. The writing test checks spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary, and is marked separately. There is no set pass mark; instead, students are ranked by their age-standardised scores for admissions. Registration opens in spring and closes on 31 August 2026.

Devonport High School for Girls offers 158 Year 7 places and uses two Quest Assessments papers: English comprehension (40 minutes, 60 questions) and Maths (two sections, 60 questions in total). Scores are age-standardised, and there is no catchment area. If there is a tie, the child who lives closest to the school gets priority. Registration opens on 27 April 2026 and closes on 31 August 2026.

This is why Ivybridge families who want a place at a Plymouth Grammar School start preparing early and make sure their child is ready for every part of the test, not just Maths.

An Ivybridge Student Who Got to Grips With the Plymouth Tests

inverted-comma

An Ivybridge boy aspired to attend Devonport High School for Boys but lacked experience in timed writing and the school’s specific exam format. His Maths skills were strong, but his English reading answers needed improvement. We focused on active reading, precise comprehension, and structured timed writing, culminating in full mock exams. By September of Year 6, he felt ready for all sections of the test, not just Maths.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

The Quest Assessments Maths paper tests Key Stage 2 content in a multiple-choice format, featuring challenging problem-solving questions. Students work with numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, algebra, geometry, and data handling, focusing on reading questions carefully and selecting the right method. Each session emphasises time management and answer checking, which are essential since each question has only one correct answer.

The Quest Assessments English reading paper includes 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 40 minutes, focusing on comprehension and language skills. Students practice close reading, answering questions, and managing time effectively. Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides online 11 Plus tuition in Ivybridge, Devon?

Adnan Khan Tutoring offers live online 11 Plus lessons for children in Years 3, 4, and 5 in Ivybridge. We help children prepare for entry to Plymouth Grammar School in English reading, Maths, and English writing.

Which grammar schools can Ivybridge children apply to?

Children in Ivybridge can apply to all three Plymouth grammar schools: Devonport High School for Boys, Devonport High School for Girls, and Plymouth High School for Girls. All three use the same entrance test, so children only need to take it once, even if they apply to more than one school.

What does the Plymouth Grammar School entrance test include?

From September 2026, all Plymouth grammar schools will use Quest Assessments. The test happens over two Saturdays: 12 September and 19 September 2026. The papers cover English reading and maths in a multiple-choice format. Devonport High School for Boys also has a separate English writing paper as a third part of the test.

Is there a catchment area for Plymouth grammar schools?

No. None of the three Plymouth grammar schools has a catchment area. Every place is decided by ranked test scores. Distance from the school is only used as a tiebreaker if two children have identical scores, so Ivybridge children can apply on equal terms.

When does registration open for the Plymouth Grammar School tests?

Registration opens on 27 April 2026 and closes on 31 August 2026. The tests are on 12 September and 19 September 2026, and results will be emailed in mid-October. You must submit the Common Application Form to your local authority by 31 October 2026.

When should my Ivybridge child start 11 Plus preparation?

Year 3 or Year 4 is ideal. The Plymouth tests cover English reading comprehension, maths reasoning and, for Devonport High School for Boys, a school-set writing paper. All three need focused, consistent preparation that takes time to build.

Does online tuition work well for preparation for Plymouth Grammar School?

Yes. Live lessons with expert tutors, screen sharing, real-time feedback, and full mock practice give children everything they need to prepare for each paper. They can do all of this from home in Ivybridge, so there is no need to travel to Plymouth for lessons.
