Why Starting Early Helps Lancaster Pupils

Beginning preparation during Year 3 or Year 4 gives children time to strengthen their academic skills gradually while becoming increasingly comfortable with examination techniques before Year 6. Regular learning over a longer period also supports stronger confidence, accuracy and time management.

For the Year 7 September 2027 entry, Lancaster Royal Grammar School admits 164 day pupils together with 12 state boarding pupils, while Clitheroe Royal Grammar School has a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 180 places.

Admission to Lancaster Royal Grammar School is based on achieving the required qualifying standard in the entrance assessment rather than reaching a fixed pass mark. The qualifying standard is reviewed and set separately for each admissions cycle.

Where more children meet the required standard than there are places available, offers are made according to the school’s published oversubscription criteria. Meeting the qualifying standard allows an application to be considered, but it does not guarantee a Year 7 place.

Early preparation allows pupils to approach competitive entrance examinations with the knowledge, reasoning ability and confidence needed to perform at their best.
