A clear, tailored learning plan for Buckinghamshire 11 Plus success

Families across New Barnet turn to Adnan Khan Tutoring for live online 11 Plus lessons that fit around Year 3 to Year 5 school life. Many of the children we support are aiming for a place at Queen Elizabeth’s School, The Henrietta Barnett School, or St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School.

Every lesson runs live via a screen share, so there’s no need to drive across Barnet after school. Sessions slot in around clubs, homework, and the rest of family life, with nothing lost by learning at the kitchen table rather than in a classroom.

Why Families in New Barnet Choose 11 Plus Tuition

In New Barnet, many local families start looking for 11 Plus support once they understand just how competitive Grammar School entry has become. This usually happens when one or more of the following situations apply:

1-round
A child is doing well day-to-day at school, but practice papers aren’t yet landing at the level a Grammar School place demands.
2-round
Maths lessons make sense in class, yet multi-step problems, fractions and worded questions unravel once a timer is running.
3-round
English reading is fine, but pulling a comprehension passage apart, or writing a tightly structured answer under pressure, is a different skill entirely.
4-round
Verbal Reasoning brings question types, letter codes, analogies, and hidden sequences that a normal primary curriculum simply never touches.
5-round
Non-Verbal Reasoning relies on spotting visual rules and spatial shifts, something most children have never practised before starting 11 Plus prep.
6-round
Parents aren’t always sure how to sequence three years of preparation, so they leave important things until too late.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for New Barnet Families

New Barnet falls within easy reach of three of London’s most competitive Grammar Schools. Rather than one shared transfer test for the whole borough, families apply through Barnet Council’s secondary school place process, and each Grammar School manages and publishes its own admissions outcomes separately.

Queen Elizabeth’s School carries a Published Admission Number of 180 for Year 7, and its admissions page currently shows the September 2026 waiting list standing at position 18. The Henrietta Barnett School’s official admissions page confirms a Published Admission Number of 120 for September 2027 entry, having offered places up to number 33 on its waiting list for the 2026 round as of 22 June 2026.

Where a school receives more strong applications than places available, its own oversubscription criteria determine the outcome. Queen Elizabeth’s School, which sets no catchment area, resolves tied scores by straight-line distance from home to the school gate (official criteria). The Henrietta Barnett School first places looked-after children, then a Pupil-Premium quota ranked within the top 300, then candidates living within three miles who sit both rounds, before working down the rank order (official admissions page).

There’s no single shared pass mark across Barnet; each school sets its own bar. Queen Elizabeth’s School requires a combined, age-standardised score of 225 or above, as set out on its official entrance test FAQs. The Henrietta Barnett School and St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School don’t publish a single cut-off score; candidates are instead ranked on combined performance, with offers made downward from the top scorers until each Published Admission Number is full.

It’s this combination of fixed places and independently run tests that pushes so many New Barnet families to start preparing well before Year 6.

Students We Support for the 11 Plus in New Barnet

We work with families across New Barnet and its EN4 and EN5 postcodes, including pupils from neighbouring East Barnet, Oakleigh Park, Friern Barnet and Cockfosters, as well as families further into Whetstone and High Barnet itself. Local primary schools we regularly support include Cromer Road Primary School and Livingstone Primary and Nursery School, among others.

We also help families a short drive further out, in Potters Bar, High Barnet, North Finchley, and Brookmans Park, through separate online 11 Plus pathways tailored to their local schools and deadlines.

Most of our New Barnet students are in Years 3 to 5, working towards selective entry at Queen Elizabeth’s School, The Henrietta Barnett School, or St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School.

For the September 2027 entry, Registration for Queen Elizabeth’s School will close at 12:00 noon on 8 July 2026. The entrance exams are scheduled for 16–17 September 2026, with provisional results expected on 1 October 2026. As these dates are reconfirmed annually, families should always check directly with each school.

For New Barnet families planning a later move to Grammar School, we also offer 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition.

How Focused Preparation Helped a New Barnet Student Succeed

inverted-comma

A New Barnet student joined us partway through Year 4, comfortable with English but visibly anxious whenever a Maths paper was timed, and unsure how to approach Non-Verbal Reasoning at all. Over the following year and a half of weekly lessons, structured mock practice, and detailed feedback after every paper, his pace and accuracy improved steadily, leaving him noticeably calmer and better prepared heading into his Barnet Grammar School exams.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

We treat Maths as a thinking subject, not a set of worksheets to get through. Pupils build fluency in numerical reasoning, early algebra, geometry, and data interpretation through varied, carefully sequenced problems, alongside the habits of setting out their work and checking their answers, which help protect marks when time is tight.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

Strong comprehension, precise vocabulary and confident written answers are non-negotiable for Barnet’s Grammar Schools, so that’s where our online English lessons focus. Pupils practise close reading, inference, spelling and punctuation, and building a written response that holds together under time pressure. Vocabulary work runs throughout, built on synonyms, antonyms, prefixes and root words, so unfamiliar terms stop feeling like a trap in the exam.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is really about pattern recognition, and pattern recognition needs repetition to feel natural. We guide pupils through analogies, letter and number sequences, code-breaking and word-relationship questions, layering in timed papers as confidence builds, so both speed and accuracy are ready for the real thing.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Most children meet Non-Verbal Reasoning for the first time through 11 Plus preparation, since nothing quite like it comes up in ordinary lessons. We work steadily through shape sequences, rule-spotting, rotations, reflections and matrix puzzles until what once looked like guesswork becomes a method pupils can rely on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides Online 11 Plus Preparation for New Barnet pupils?

In New Barnet, Adnan Khan Tutoring provides live, one-to-one online 11 Plus tuition for children in Years 3 to 5 across the London Borough of Barnet, preparing them for entry to Barnet’s Grammar Schools.

What score does my child need to be considered for Barnet Grammar School?

It varies by school. Queen Elizabeth’s School requires a combined, age-standardised score of 225 or above. The Henrietta Barnett School and St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School don’t publish a fixed pass mark, ranking candidates instead on their combined performance across each test round.

How is the Barnet 11 Plus structured?

All three Barnet Grammar Schools use GL Assessment papers, though the format differs by school. Queen Elizabeth’s School sets two papers, Maths and English, in one sitting. St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School tests English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning on a single day. The Henrietta Barnett School runs two rounds — a GL Assessment first stage, followed by the school’s own second-round papers.

Does meeting the required score guarantee a place at a Barnet Grammar School?

No. None of the three schools has a catchment area, so reaching the required standard doesn’t guarantee a place. Offers depend on each school’s own oversubscription criteria, applied through the Barnet Council Common Application Form process.

When should my child start 11 Plus tuition in New Barnet?

Starting in Year 3 or Year 4 generally provides the most breathing room, allowing Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning to be covered properly before the Year 6 exams.

Is online 11 Plus tuition effective for Grammar School preparation?

Yes. Live, one-to-one online lessons with screen-sharing and real-time feedback work just as well as sitting in a room together, and paired with homework and timed practice, they cover everything needed without any travel time.

Do you run 11 Plus mock exams?

Yes. We run full-length, timed mock exams built around the GL Assessment format, so students arrive at the real test familiar with both the pacing and the pressure.
