A clear, tailored learning plan for Buckinghamshire 11 Plus success

Orpington is one of the few places in London where families have two selective Grammar Schools literally in the same town. Newstead Wood School for girls and St Olave’s Grammar School for boys both sit within the BR6 postcode, meaning local children are applying to some of the most competitive state school places in the capital.

Adnan Khan Tutoring runs live online 11 Plus lessons for Year 3 to Year 5 pupils in Orpington, so preparation fits neatly around school life without any extra travel on top of an already busy week.

Why Families in Orpington Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Despite having the Grammar Schools right on the doorstep, Orpington parents are often the first to acknowledge how tough getting in actually is. The same worries tend to surface:

1-round
A child is performing well at primary school, but their practice test results are still not at Grammar School level.
2-round
Non-Verbal Reasoning is the most common sticking point — it doesn’t come up in everyday lessons, yet it makes up half of Newstead Wood’s entrance test.
3-round
Verbal Reasoning question types, sequences, codes, and analogies are unfamiliar and need specific practice to feel manageable under time pressure.
4-round
For St Olave’s, the Stage 2 written English and Maths papers require a level of structured, exam-style response that goes well beyond what children produce in ordinary classwork.
5-round
Some Orpington boys are applying to both St Olave’s and Bexley Grammar Schools, meaning they have to prepare for two different test formats simultaneously.
6-round
Parents aren’t always sure how to structure preparation across three school years to cover both sets of demands without burning out.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Orpington Families

Orpington is uniquely placed; both of Bromley’s Grammar Schools, Newstead Wood School and St Olave’s Grammar School, are based right here, giving local families walkable access to two of London’s most selective state schools. Places are allocated through Bromley Council’s secondary school admissions process, with each school managing its own admissions independently.

Offering 168 places in Year 7 for girls, Newstead Wood School uses an entrance test made up of two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers covering Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, each lasting around 50–60 minutes.

St Olave’s Grammar School offers 128 Year 7 places for boys through a two‑stage process. Stage 1, the school’s own Selective Eligibility Test, is a one‑hour multiple-choice paper covering English, Maths, VR and NVR, sat on 18 September 2026. The top 450 boys nationally are invited to Stage 2 on 13 November 2026, which consists of two one‑hour written papers in English and Maths.

Newstead Wood sets a qualifying score of 210; St Olave’s does not publish a fixed Stage 1 pass mark. Final offers at St Olave’s are based on combined Stage 1 and Stage 2 scores, and applications for both schools are submitted through the Bromley Council secondary school places process.

Having two Grammar Schools in the same town doesn’t make the process easier; if anything, it raises local expectations and competition, making structured preparation all the more important.

How an Orpington Student Improved Their 11 Plus Preparation

inverted-comma

In Year 4, an Orpington boy joined us, aiming for St Olave’s Grammar School while keeping Bexley Grammar Schools as an alternative route. His Maths was well developed, but his Verbal Reasoning and English writing needed strengthening for Stage 2 expectations. Over eighteen months, consistent weekly tuition and mock practice in both exam formats improved his pace and accuracy across all core areas.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

Our Maths sessions are built around the kind of reasoning and multi-step problem-solving that St Olave’s Stage 2 tests, taking pupils well beyond the standard curriculum. We strengthen numerical reasoning, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation in a structured sequence, with timed practice built in from the start to improve both speed and accuracy.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

With close reading, inference, creative writing, and analytical response across two one-hour papers, St Olave’s Stage 2 English is demanding. Our lessons build essential extended writing skills and vocabulary range, supported by structured comprehension practice that improves results on the day.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning runs through both Bromley school tests and, in Newstead Wood’s case, makes up a full half of the entrance exam. We work through every major question type, analogies, sequences, coded patterns, and word relationships, in a carefully scaffolded order, adding timed papers as each type becomes familiar.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning appears in Newstead Wood’s test and St Olave’s SET and is commonly the hardest section for pupils, as it differs greatly from classroom learning. We systematically train students in shape sequences, rule-spotting, rotations, reflections, and matrix puzzles to build accuracy and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides online 11 Plus tuition in Orpington?

For children in Year 3 to Year 5 across Orpington and the wider Bromley area, Adnan Khan Tutoring provides live, personalised online 11 Plus tuition.

How does Newstead Wood School select pupils?

Newstead Wood School uses a two-paper GL Assessment test in Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Girls must score 210 or above to be considered. When oversubscribed, the school prioritises Pupil Premium applicants within nine miles, then all other qualifying applicants within nine miles in score order.

How does St Olave’s Grammar School select pupils?

St Olave’s runs a two-stage process. All registered boys sit the SET on 18 September 2026. The top 450 are invited to Stage 2 on 13 November 2026 — two written papers in English and Maths. Final offers are made on combined Stage 1 and Stage 2 scores.

Can my child prepare for both Bromley Grammar Schools at the same time?

Yes. Both schools test Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, so the core preparation overlaps significantly. The main addition for St Olave’s is the written English and Maths element of Stage 2, which we build in from early on for boys targeting that school.

Is online 11 Plus tuition effective for Grammar School preparation?

Indeed. Live, one-to-one online lessons with real-time feedback and screen-sharing are just as effective as in-person tuition, and combined with homework and timed practice, they give children everything they need without any travel time.

When should my child start 11 Plus tuition in Orpington?

Year 3 or Year 4 is the best starting point, giving enough time to cover all four subject areas and both test formats properly before registration opens in Year 5.

Do you run 11 Plus mock exams?

Yes. We run timed mocks for both Newstead Wood’s GL Assessment format and St Olave’s SET and Stage 2 format, so children go into the real tests familiar with the pace and conditions.
