Why Families in Petts Wood Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Petts Wood parents often reach out once they start looking seriously at the two Orpington Grammar Schools and realise just how much targeted preparation is involved. The concerns we hear most often:

1-round
A child is ahead of their class at school, but hasn’t yet seen the kind of reasoning questions the Grammar School tests use.
2-round
Non-Verbal Reasoning, spotting patterns in shapes and sequences, is completely new to most children and needs specific, repeated practice.
3-round
Verbal Reasoning looks manageable until children try timed questions under exam conditions and find the pace harder than expected.
4-round
The Stage 2 papers in written English and Maths go significantly further than the national curriculum, and children need time to build up to that level.
5-round
Newstead Wood and St Olave’s use completely different test formats, and some Petts Wood families are preparing for both, which takes careful planning.
6-round
Parents aren’t always sure how to spread three years of preparation so that things don’t feel rushed or repetitive by the time the real tests arrive.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Petts Wood Families

Petts Wood families sit within easy reach of both Bromley Grammar Schools, just a short drive to Orpington. Each runs its own completely separate admissions process — there’s no shared consortium test here,  and applications feed into Bromley Council’s secondary school places process.

A score of 210 is required for Newstead Wood School’s GL Assessment papers, whereas St Olave’s Grammar School selects only the top 450 boys nationally at Stage 1 without a fixed pass mark. Both schools issue final offers through Bromley Council’s admissions process

For Year 7 entry, Newstead Wood School offers 168 places for girls. The entrance process involves two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers in Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, each lasting about 50–60 minutes.

St Olave’s Grammar School admits 128 boys into Year 7 each year via a two-stage process. Stage 1 is a one-hour multiple-choice Selective Eligibility Test covering English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning on 18 September 2026, with the top 450 candidates progressing to Stage 2 written papers in English and Maths on 13 November 2026. There is no faith requirement or catchment restriction.

The combination of two different test formats, different registration windows and very limited places means that well-planned preparation from an early year group genuinely changes outcomes for Petts Wood families.

Improving 11 Plus Performance: A Petts Wood Student’s Experience

inverted-comma

A student based in Petts Wood started with us in Year 4, strong in English but finding Non-Verbal Reasoning difficult and unsure about timed Verbal Reasoning tasks. Over time, weekly sessions and regular mock exams helped them build strong reasoning skills and approach the Newstead Wood test with calm confidence.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

Our Maths lessons develop reasoning-based, multi-step problem-solving skills that feature in the St Olave’s Stage 2 paper and the numerical reasoning sections of the SET. Pupils progress through numerical reasoning, early algebra, geometry, and data interpretation in a structured sequence, improving both accuracy and exam speed alongside conceptual understanding.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

To succeed in St Olave’s English, pupils must go beyond everyday schoolwork, mastering close reading, inference, creative writing, and structured extended responses across two timed papers. Our lessons develop these skills in a structured way, while improving vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation across both formats.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is central to both the Newstead Wood entrance test and the St Olave’s SET. We cover every key question type: analogies, sequences, codes, word relationships, and logical reasoning, in a progression that builds genuine understanding rather than memorised tricks, with timed practice steadily added as confidence grows.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Forming a major part of Newstead Wood’s test and included in St Olave’s SET, Non-Verbal Reasoning is often the most challenging area for pupils to improve. Because it is unlike everyday schoolwork, we break it down step by step, covering shape sequences, rotations, reflections, rule-spotting, and matrices until it becomes second nature.

What score does my child need for Newstead Wood School?

Newstead Wood School requires a minimum qualifying score of 210 on its GL Assessment Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers. When oversubscribed, places go first to Pupil Premium applicants within nine miles, then to all other qualifying applicants within nine miles in score order.

Yes. Live, one-to-one online lessons with real-time feedback and screen-sharing provide children with full exam preparation for both test formats without the need to travel.
