A clear, tailored learning plan for Buckinghamshire 11 Plus success

Rainham families have a unique advantage. Rainham Mark Grammar School, a co-educational grammar school, is located nearby on Pump Lane in the heart of ME8. With 235 Year 7 places, it welcomes children from all over Medway and is one of the area’s most popular grammar schools. Children in Rainham who go to a Medway primary school take the Medway Test at their own school in September. One test result can open the door to all six Medway grammar schools. We help Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 children in Rainham get ready for the Medway Test.

All our lessons are live and online, so children can learn from home without needing to travel, fitting sessions around their school days and other weekly activities.

Why Families in Rainham Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Having a grammar school close by does not make the test any easier. These are the reasons parents in Rainham reach out to us:

1-round
A child might be popular at school and doing well, but when they try a practice test at home, their score doesn’t meet the Medway Test standard.
2-round
In Maths, a child may feel confident with regular classwork, but the problem-solving questions in the Medway Test are tougher. They are longer, more complex, and more challenging than what they usually see at school.
3-round
In English, a child might read well but struggle with comprehension questions, especially when they need to provide exact, evidence-based answers rather than just general ideas.
4-round
In Verbal Reasoning, the child may not have seen word codes, letter sequences, or analogy questions before. These types of questions aren’t part of regular primary school lessons.
5-round
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, questions about shapes and patterns can be confusing, so the child often guesses instead of using a clear method to solve them.
6-round
Parents want their child to sit the test at school in September feeling properly prepared, not going in blind and hoping for the best.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Rainham Families

Rainham is at the centre of one of the most competitive grammar school systems in the South East. For families in this area, learning what the Medway Test involves is the first step to giving your child a real chance.

Rainham Mark Grammar School has 235 Year 7 places available for September 2026. Last year, there were 948 applications for these spots, which means about four students applied for each place. Since there is no catchment area, children from all over Medway and beyond have an equal chance. The best way to get a place is to achieve a strong score on the Medway Test.

The Medway Test, set by GL Assessment, includes three papers: English, Maths, and Reasoning, plus a creative writing task, all taken on the same day. Scores are age-standardised and weighted, with English and Maths scores each doubled and added to the Reasoning score for a total out of 700. The qualifying standard is the top 25% of the Medway cohort, with recent pass marks ranging from 482 to 492.

Passing the Medway Test allows a child to be considered for grammar school, but each school has its own oversubscription criteria for deciding who receives an offer. At Rainham Mark, distance from the school is the final tiebreaker. For children living in ME8, a strong score gives the best chance of getting into their local school.

This is why Rainham families who are set on securing a place at a Grammar School take preparation seriously well before the registration window opens in May.

Students We Support for the 11 Plus in Rainham

We support children in Rainham and nearby areas, including Sittingbourne, Strood, Parkwood, and Rainham Mark, all close to the ME8 postcode. Our students come from local primary schools like Miers Court Primary School and Thames View Primary School.

We also help families from other parts of Medway, such as Chatham, Rochester, Strood, and Gillingham, through our online 11 Plus tuition.

Most of our students are in Years 3, 4, or 5. Many families in Rainham hope for a place at Rainham Mark Grammar School, but they often include other Medway grammar schools on their applications, such as Rochester Grammar School, Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, Chatham Grammar School, Fort Pitt Grammar School, and Holcombe Grammar School.

Please note that Rainham Mark asks for a Supplementary Information Form as well as the Common Application Form. Both forms need to be sent in by the October deadline. Registration for the Medway Test starts on 18 May and ends on 12 June 2026. Children at Medway primary schools will take the test on 15 or 16 September 2026, and results will be out on 14 October 2026. For the most up-to-date information, visit the Medway Council admissions pages.

We also offer 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition for families who are thinking about grammar school entry at a later stage.

A Rainham Student Who Made the Most of Being Local

inverted-comma

This girl from Rainham lived just five minutes away from Rainham Mark Grammar School and was determined to earn a place there. She had no experience with the Medway Test format. Verbal Reasoning was completely new to her, and the creative writing section seemed overwhelming at first. By working through weekly lessons, regular homework, and gradually building up to full mock practice, she became confident in every part of the test. By September, she walked in knowing exactly what to expect.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

The Medway Test Maths paper lasts 50 minutes and tests skills beyond standard classroom work. It measures problem-solving in areas like numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, algebra, geometry, and statistics. Our sessions help children read each question carefully, pick the right method, and solve it step by step within the time limit. We also encourage checking answers before moving on, as this can be the key to passing when scores are close.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

The Medway Test English paper includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar questions, and a creative writing task. In our lessons, children learn to read carefully, understand questions, and write clear answers. For creative writing, we focus on quick planning, structured writing, and finishing on time. Language skills are emphasised in every session.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning is part of the Medway Test Reasoning paper and includes question types not in the primary school curriculum. We methodically cover letter and number sequences, word codes, analogies, synonyms, antonyms, and logic problems, adding time pressure later. This helps children recognise question formats in the test rather than solve them under stress.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning works alongside Verbal Reasoning in the Medway Test, focusing on shapes and patterns instead of words. This skill isn’t typically taught in primary school, but with the right guidance, children can improve rapidly. We teach them to systematically analyse sequences, identifying rotations, reflections, and changes, helping them apply this logic to new examples until it feels natural.

Which Grammar Schools can Rainham children apply to?

Rainham children can apply to all six Medway grammar schools with just one Medway Test result. These schools are Rainham Mark Grammar School, Rochester Grammar School, Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, Chatham Grammar School, Fort Pitt Grammar School, and Holcombe Grammar School. Rainham Mark Grammar School is located in the ME8 area.

How many children apply to Rainham Mark Grammar School each year?

More than 1,000 children applied for September 2025 entry, competing for 235 Year 7 places. That means there are about 4.4 applicants for each available seat. The school does not have a catchment area, so children from all over Medway and beyond can apply.

What score does my child need to pass the Medway Test?

The pass mark is set each year based on the top 25% of the Medway cohort. In recent years, this has ranged from 482 to 492 out of a maximum weighted score of 700. Passing gives your child eligibility for grammar school, but each school then uses its own admissions criteria to allocate places.

When does Medway Test registration open?

Registration starts on 18 May 2026 and ends on 12 June 2026. Children at Medway primary schools will take the test at their own school on 15 or 16 September 2026. Results will be available on 14 October 2026.

When should my child start 11 Plus preparation in Rainham?

The best time to start is in Year 3 or Year 4. The Medway Test includes Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and a creative writing task. These are not taught in primary school lessons, so children need time to develop these skills from the beginning before the September test.
