Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Salisbury Families

Grammar Schools use the GL Assessment 11 Plus. The test has two multiple-choice papers covering English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Scores are age-standardised. Both tests take place on Saturday, 26 September 2026. Results are issued in mid-October, and the Wiltshire Secondary Application Form must be submitted to Wiltshire Council by 31 October 2026.
Bishop Wordsworth’s School offers around 160 Year 7 places for boys. Parents must register directly with the school before the deadline, and boys living closer to Salisbury are given priority once they reach the required standard.
South Wilts Grammar School also offers around 160 Year 7 places for girls. Families must register separately with the school, and although there is no formal catchment area, distance from the school is considered when places are allocated.
For this reason, many Salisbury families start preparing in Year 3 or Year 4, giving their children plenty of time to develop strong skills in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning before the 11 Plus.
