Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Stratford-upon-Avon Families

Many families in Stratford-upon-Avon begin preparing early because places at the town’s Grammar Schools are highly competitive. Every year, children from across Warwickshire and neighbouring counties compete for a limited number of places.

The Warwickshire 11 Plus is also known as the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test. GL Assessment creates the test, which has two multiple-choice papers, each lasting 50 to 60 minutes. English and Verbal Reasoning make up half of the total score. Mathematics and Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning each count for a quarter. By taking this test, your child can apply to all local Grammar Schools.

Scores are adjusted for age, so younger children have a fair chance. Registration for entry in September 2027 closed on 30 June 2026. The test takes place on Saturday, 12 September 2026, and results will be sent by email on Friday, 16 October 2026. Families need to send the Common Application Form to Warwickshire County Council by 31 October 2026.

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School is rated Outstanding and offers 120 Year 7 places. King Edward VI School, also known as Shakespeare’s School, is for boys in Stratford-upon-Avon. Both schools use the West Midlands GL Assessment, which includes two multiple-choice papers, each lasting 50 to 60 minutes. Families in Shipston-on-Stour should keep in mind that both schools are about seven miles away and very competitive, so a strong 11 Plus score is important.

Starting preparation in Year 3 or Year 4 allows children to strengthen their English, Maths, and reasoning skills while becoming familiar with the format and pace of the Warwickshire 11 Plus.
