Why Families in Strood Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Being close to Grammar Schools does not make passing the Medway Test easier. These are the reasons Strood parents come to us:

1-round
A child is doing well at primary school but has never taken a timed reasoning paper and has no experience of what the Medway Test looks like.
2-round
In Maths, the child handles classroom exercises confidently, but the numerical reasoning questions in the Medway Test, which are wordier, more layered, and more demanding, feel like a different subject.
3-round
In English, the child reads and writes well at school but freezes when asked to write a full creative piece to a prompt within a limited time.
4-round
In Verbal Reasoning, the child has never encountered letter codes, word analogies, or logic sequences in school and does not know where to start.
5-round
In Non-Verbal Reasoning, the child finds shape-and-pattern questions confusing and tends to guess rather than use a clear visual method.
6-round
Parents know the Medway Test registration window for 2027 entry closed on 12 June 2026. This short window focuses the mind on preparing promptly.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Strood Families

Strood is next to Rochester, which allows easy access to two of Medway’s respected grammar schools. However, many people want places at both schools, and neither school has a catchment area that helps families in ME2.

To join Year 7 at The Rochester Grammar School, students need to pass the Medway Test (11 Plus). The school is selective and offers 205 places each year, so competition is strong. If there are more applicants than places available, priority is given to pupils eligible for Pupil Premium and those who already have siblings at the school.

To join Year 7 at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (SJWMS) in Rochester, students must perform well on the Medway Test, as entry is highly competitive. Each year, there are 203 places available for boys.

The Barnet Grammar Schools Framework outlines that qualifying requires far more than basic academic ability. To secure entry via the GL Assessment process, children need to target exceptionally high standardised scores.

For this reason, Strood families who want a place at a Grammar School start preparing early. They make sure their child is familiar with every part of the Medway Test before September.

Students We Support for the 11 Plus in Strood

We support children across Strood and nearby areas, including Hoo and Chatham, all within or near the ME2 postcode. We prepare children attending local primary schools, including Leigh Academy Strood, Gordon Children’s Academy, and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School..

We also support families from across Medway, including Rochester, Gillingham, and Rainham, through the same online programme.

Most children joining us are in Years 3, 4, or 5 and aim for places at Rochester Grammar School, Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School, or other Medway Grammar Schools.

Families should note that Rochester Grammar School requires a Supplementary Information Form in addition to the Common Application Form. Both must be submitted by 31 October 2026. Children at Strood primary schools take the Medway Test at school on 15 or 16 September 2026. Results will be released on 14 October 2026. Always check the Medway Council admissions pages for the latest guidance.

We also offer 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition for families considering later entry to Grammar School.

A Strood Student Who Made Rochester Grammar Her Goal

inverted-comma

This Strood girl had walked past Rochester Grammar School her whole life and always wanted to go there. What she lacked when she joined us in Year 4 was any experience of Verbal Reasoning or timed creative writing. We worked through every section of the Medway Test from the ground up, building understanding before speed and speed before pressure. By the time the September test arrived, she was walking in with a clear plan for every paper rather than hoping the questions would look familiar.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

The Medway Test Maths paper features 30 minutes of numerical reasoning, including multi-step problems requiring reading and calculations under time pressure. Our sessions focus on building number sense and problem-solving skills across topics such as fractions, decimals, ratios, algebra, geometry, and data analysis, emphasising time management and checking answers.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

The Medway Test English paper assesses reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and grammar, along with a separate creative writing task. In our sessions, children learn to read carefully, answer questions accurately with text evidence, and quickly plan and structure their writing creatively within time limits. Language skills are integrated throughout each lesson.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning

The Medway Test’s Reasoning paper covers both Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, with question types that aren’t taught in primary school. We teach each type, like sequences, word codes, analogies, and logic problems, one at a time. This helps children fully understand each question before we work on building speed. By the time the exam arrives, your child will be ready for every kind of question in the Reasoning paper.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning

Non-Verbal Reasoning is about understanding visual patterns and using rules to work with shapes and sequences. These skills are not usually taught directly. We explain each question type in simple steps, so children can learn to spot rotations, reflections, and changes in sequences. This clear method often helps students improve more quickly than you might expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides online 11 Plus tuition in Strood, Kent?

Adnan Khan Tutoring offers live online 11 Plus lessons for Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 children in Strood. We prepare children for the Medway Test in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and creative writing.

Which Grammar Schools are closest to Strood?

Rochester Grammar School for girls and Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School for boys are both on Maidstone Road in Rochester, just across the river from Strood. Holcombe Grammar School in Chatham, which became co-educational in September 2026, is also nearby.

Does Rochester Grammar School require any extra forms?

Yes. Alongside the Common Application Form submitted to Medway Council, Rochester Grammar School requires a Supplementary Information Form. Both must be submitted by 31 October 2026. Missing either will result in an incomplete application.

What is the Medway Test and how is it scored?

The Medway Test is set by GL Assessment and consists of three papers: English, Maths, and Reasoning, plus a creative writing task. Scores are weighted: English and Maths scores are each multiplied by two and added to the Reasoning score, giving a total out of 700. The qualifying standard is set at the top 25% of the cohort each year, recently between 482 and 492.

When does Medway Test registration open for 2027 entry?

Registration opens on 13 May 2026 and closes on 12 June 2026. Children at Strood primary schools take the test at their own school on 15 or 16 September 2026. Results are released on 14 October 2026, and the Common Application Form deadline is 31 October 2026.

Is the Medway Test the same as the Kent Test?

No. The Medway Test and the Kent Test are separate exams. Strood is in Medway, so children here sit the Medway Test. Families who want to apply to Kent grammar schools outside Medway must register separately for the Kent Test.

When should my child start 11 Plus preparation in Strood?

Year 3 or Year 4 is the right time. The Medway Test covers Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, and a creative writing task, none of which are taught in primary school. Starting early gives children time to build every skill properly before September.
