A clear, tailored learning plan for Buckinghamshire 11 Plus success

Teignmouth doesn’t have its own Grammar School, but it is well connected to the three Torbay Grammar Schools: Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, Torquay Girls’ Grammar School, and Churston Ferrers Grammar School. With the Torbay Consortium, children only need to take one test to apply to all three schools. The test has two GL Assessment multiple-choice papers in English and Maths. There are no Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning sections, just two papers on the subjects children already know from school.

We support children in Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 in Teignmouth and the TQ14 area with Grammar School preparation. Our live online 11 Plus tuition offers flexibility, making it easy to fit sessions around school and beach activities.

Why Families in Teignmouth Choose 11 Plus Tuition

The Torbay test only covers English and Maths, but that does not mean preparation is straightforward. These are the things that bring Teignmouth parents to us:

1-round
A child is doing well in school but has never taken a GL Assessment-style paper and isn’t sure how their abilities compare to Torbay Grammar School’s expectations.
2-round
In Maths, they excel in class but struggle with the reasoning questions, which require careful reading and more steps than typical problems.
3-round
In English, they read well but often rush through comprehension questions, providing brief answers that miss the point..
4-round
Parents know Teignmouth children are not prioritised among the 15 feeder schools for Churston Ferrers Grammar, so they want their child to achieve a high score to remain competitive across all three schools.
5-round
The family is aware that the test is in September but is unsure how much preparation is genuinely needed or how to build up English and Maths skills at the right pace across Years 3, 4 and 5.
6-round
Parents are looking for a qualified tutor who understands the Torbay Consortium format, not just someone who hands out past papers and hopes for the best.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Teignmouth Families

Teignmouth is well connected to the Torbay Grammar Schools, but there is no local priority for these schools. All places are awarded based solely on test scores, and children from across South Devon compete for them.

The Torbay Consortium 11 Plus, created by GL Assessment, includes two multiple-choice papers in English and Maths. Each paper lasts about 50 minutes. There are no Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning sections. Scores are age-standardised so younger children are not at a disadvantage. Registration for the 2026 test closes at midday on 4 September 2026, and the test takes place on Saturday 19 September 2026. Results come out in mid-October, and you need to submit the Common Application Form to Devon County Council by 31 October 2026.

Torquay Boys’ Grammar School has 168 Year 7 places for boys from all over South Devon. There is no catchment area, so places go to those with the highest age-standardised GL Assessment scores. Torquay Girls’ Grammar School offers 192 Year 7 places for September 2026. Admission is based only on academic ability in the 11 Plus test, and there are no catchment area restrictions.

Churston Ferrers Grammar School has 150 places and prioritises students from 15 Torbay feeder schools. Teignmouth children are not in this group and need a high GL Assessment score to get one of the remaining places. This makes competition in the TQ14 area especially tough.

This is why Teignmouth families who want a Grammar School place start preparing well before Year 6 and take both English and Maths preparation seriously from the start.

We also provide 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition for families considering grammar school entry at a later stage.

A Teignmouth Student Who Made Torquay Her Goal

inverted-comma

A girl from Teignmouth could see Torquay Girls’ Grammar School from the coastal path. When she joined us in Year 4, she had never taken a timed English paper, and her answers were too short for the GL Assessment. Although Maths was her strength, she struggled with comprehension. We focused on improving her reading accuracy and answer technique before gradually introducing timed practice. By September of Year 6, her English scores matched her Maths, and she was able to keep up with the required speed.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

The GL Assessment Maths paper for the Torbay Consortium tests more than just classroom learning. It includes problem-solving questions that require careful thought. Our Maths sessions cover numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, algebra, geometry, and data. We focus on building reasoning skills and speed for the 50-minute multiple-choice exam. Each session practices answer checking and time management, which are crucial since each question has only one correct answer.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

The GL Assessment English paper tests reading comprehension and language skills through multiple-choice questions. Students must read each passage carefully, understand the questions, and select the best answer under time pressure. Our sessions focus on attentive reading, finding text evidence, and considering word meanings and tone. We also cover vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and grammar to ensure children are well-prepared for all types of questions on the test.
