Why Families in Tilehurst Choose 11 Plus Tuition
As Grammar School admissions in Reading grow increasingly competitive, families in Tilehurst often turn to 11 Plus support. Their journeys typically begin with one or more of these situations:

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Tilehurst
Families
Berkshire is not a fully selective county like Buckinghamshire. In Reading, there are two state Grammar Schools: Reading School for boys and Kendrick School for girls. Each school has its own entrance test, administered separately rather than a single countywide exam.
Reading School, a boys’ selective Grammar School, offers 138 day places and 12 weekly boarding places each year, for a total of 150 places. The school usually has more qualified applicants than available spots, so it uses its oversubscription criteria every year.
In nearly all cases, these regional schools receive far more applications than there are available spaces. When this happens, places are allocated using strict, rank-ordered oversubscription criteria determined by the individual admission authorities.
Families need to submit Common Application Forms to Reading Borough Council by 31 October. Secondary school offers are confirmed on 1 March, which is the Department for Education’s National Offer Day. If a family does not receive an offer, they can appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel through Reading Borough Council.
Since each school has its own test on a different date and looks for different skills, many families in Tilehurst start 11 Plus preparation early. This helps their child get ready for one or both entrance exams.
Students We Support for the 11 Plus in Tilehurst
We help families in Tilehurst and the surrounding Reading areas, such as Caversham, Cippenham, Langley, Cookham, Datchet, and Eton, covering RG30 and RG31. We also work with students from local primary schools like Park Lane Primary School, St Paul’s Catholic Primary School, Birch Copse Primary School, Moorlands Primary School, and Long Lane Primary School.
We also offer online 11 Plus preparation for families throughout Reading and West Berkshire.
Many of our students are in Years 3, 4, or 5 and are preparing for selective entry to Reading School or Kendrick School.
Registration for the Reading School and Kendrick School entrance tests for September 2027 entry is now closed. Parents can visit the official admissions pages for both schools to find information about late registration, test details, and next steps. The Reading School test for day and boarding applicants will be on 16 July 2026, and the Kendrick School test will be on 18 September 2026. Results for both schools are expected in mid-October 2026.
For Tilehurst students planning to apply to grammar or independent schools at a later stage, we also provide 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition.

Two Years of 11 Plus Preparation in Tilehurst
When we first assessed this Tilehurst student in Year 3, we saw a confident and curious learner who felt uneasy about timed writing and unfamiliar question types. In our sessions, we focused on building his stamina with different question formats, organising his written answers, and solving problems under time limits. Since the Reading School admission exam covers a broad range of Key Stage 2 topics, not just standard verbal and non-verbal reasoning, we tailored our practice to reflect that. Over two years of live lessons, regular feedback, and full mock test days, he became noticeably calmer and more methodical when facing unfamiliar material. This helped him feel much better prepared for the Reading School exam.

11 Plus Maths
Our maths tutors go beyond repetitive drills, equipping students with powerful problem-solving skills and test strategies. Learners master data interpretation, geometry, algebraic reasoning, and number challenges with confidence. Following the Reading School and Kendrick School Math criteria, we teach students to show their working and check solutions, helping them avoid careless mistakes even when the clock is ticking.

11 Plus English
To excel in the Reading School or Kendrick School admission exams, students need sharp comprehension, a rich vocabulary, and precise writing. In our online 11 Plus English sessions, children explore reading strategies, tackle inference questions, and refine their spelling, punctuation, and structured writing. Engaging activities with synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, and root words help expand vocabulary and build confidence for timed English challenges.

11 Plus Verbal Reasoning
Verbal reasoning preparation unlocks logical thinking and sharpens the ability to spot the linguistic patterns that often appear in the GL Assessment Kendrick School entrance exam. Through guided practice, students become adept at cracking analogies, letter sequences, codes, word links, and logic puzzles with speed and accuracy. Frequent practice papers and timed exercises empower students to approach real test situations with growing confidence.

11 Plus Non-Verbal Reasoning
Many children find Non-Verbal Reasoning challenging at first, since it relies on visual thinking rather than traditional classroom learning. Our sessions focus on interpreting shapes, uncovering hidden rules, understanding spatial relationships, and solving visual sequences. With guided practice in rotations, reflections, codes, matrices, and pattern transformations, students steadily build their confidence and skills.
