Why Families in Wallington Choose 11 Plus Tuition

Many families in Wallington begin searching for 11 Plus support once they realise how challenging it can be to get into Sutton Grammar Schools. These are some of the situations they often encounter:

1-round
A child might be bright and hardworking, but still not achieve a high enough score to pass the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test or perform well enough in the second-stage written exams to receive an offer.
2-round
In Maths, a child may understand lessons in class but lose marks on multi-step problems, fractions, ratios, and word problems when working under time pressure.
3-round
In English, a child might read well but struggle to analyse texts, write structured answers, or use precise vocabulary during exams. These skills are important in the second stage.
4-round
Families are often unsure how to plan their child’s preparation in Years 3, 4, and 5 to cover both stages of the Sutton process in time. Registration for the SET usually opens in May of Year 5 and closes in late June.

Why 11 Plus Preparation Matters for Wallington
Families

Wallington is unique in the Sutton area because all three of its secondary schools are selective Grammar Schools. Wallington County Grammar School for Boys, Wallington High School for Girls, and Wilson’s School, considered one of the top state Grammar Schools in Britain, are also in the town. Together with Sutton Grammar School and Nonsuch High School for Girls, these schools form a group of five selective schools that use the same entrance test, called the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET). This allows students to apply to any or all of the five schools by taking the test just once.

The SET is a shared first-stage test used by all five Sutton Grammar Schools. It includes two multiple-choice papers in Maths and English, each lasting about 40 to 50 minutes. The questions are based on the Key Stage 2 curriculum. The SET does not include Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning. If students pass the SET, they are invited to a second-stage exam. Wilson’s also holds an additional Aptitude Test Day.

Passing the first-stage test or the second-stage tests does not automatically mean you will be offered a place at any of the participating schools. Each school uses its own oversubscription criteria to decide who gets a place. There is no set pass mark at either stage. Entry depends on how well all applicants perform that year, so the required score can rise if there are stronger candidates.

Sutton is known as one of the most competitive areas in the country for Grammar School entry. Nonsuch High School for Girls Published Admission Number (PAN) for entry to Year 7 is 210.

Because of these factors and the two-stage Sutton process, many Wallington families begin preparing for the 11 Plus well before Year 6 and seek expert help for both stages of the test.

Many of the children we help are in Years 3, 4, or 5 and are preparing for entry to one or more of Sutton’s five Grammar Schools: Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls, Wilson’s School, Sutton Grammar School, and Nonsuch High School for Girls. Some families also prepare for Grammar Schools in nearby areas such as Croydon and Kingston, which have their own tests and registration processes.

Registration for Grammar School entry in September 2027 is now closed. We suggest that families check the exact dates and registration details each year with the Sutton Grammar Schools Consortium or the London Borough of Sutton, since these can change slightly each year.

For a child in Wallington aiming for late entry to grammar or independent schools, we also provide 12 Plus and 13 Plus tuition.

Mastering the Sutton 11 Plus Process

inverted-comma

A Wallington student began their journey in Year 4, showing great promise in maths but needing support with timed written English. Over the course of a structured two-year programme, routine mock exams and detailed guidance steadily boosted their speed, accuracy, and confidence. This comprehensive preparation fully equipped them to tackle both stages of the Sutton Grammar School admissions process.

Maths

11 Plus Maths

Mathematics sessions focus on developing problem-solving abilities and exam strategies rather than repetitive drills. Students are taught to approach number problems, algebraic reasoning, geometry, and data interpretation systematically, utilising Key Stage 2 content relevant to both the first-stage Mathematics paper and the second-stage written assessments of the Sutton Entrance Test (SET). Instruction includes exam techniques such as demonstrating all working and verifying answers to reduce careless errors under timed conditions.

11 Plus English

11 Plus English

English is examined at both stages of the Sutton process. The SET’s first-stage English paper is multiple-choice and assesses reading and comprehension skills within a timed format. The second-stage written English tests at Sutton Grammar Schools are not multiple-choice: they require extended, written responses under exam conditions. In our online 11 Plus English lessons, children practise both types of work, building comprehension accuracy and timed written expression alongside vocabulary range, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides online 11 Plus tuition in Wallington, London Borough of Sutton?

Adnan Khan Tutoring offers live online 11 Plus tuition for students in Years 3 to 5, preparing them for the Sutton Selective Eligibility Test (SET) and local Grammar School second-stage examinations.

How does the Sutton 11 Plus process work?

The Sutton 11 Plus admissions process consists of two stages. Initially, students take the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), which includes multiple-choice papers in Mathematics and English. Those who qualify proceed to a written second-stage examination, which determines final placement offers.

Does my child need to take separate tests for each Sutton Grammar School?

No. The initial SET serves as a single, shared assessment for all five Sutton Grammar Schools and Greenshaw High School. However, each school administers its own distinct second-stage test and schedule.

Is there a fixed pass mark for the Sutton 11 Plus?

No. The qualifying standard fluctuates annually based on overall cohort performance. Due to oversubscription, achieving the qualifying score does not guarantee admission.

Is online 11 Plus tuition effective for Grammar School preparation?

Yes. Live interactive lessons, supplemented by homework and timed practice, provide comprehensive preparation while eliminating the need for commuting.

Do you run 11 Plus mock exams?

Yes. Full-length, timed mock examinations are offered for both the SET and second-stage formats to develop exam technique and familiarity.

When should my child start 11 Plus tuition in Wallington?

It is recommended to begin tuition in Year 3 or Year 4 to ensure comprehensive coverage of material before SET registration opens in May of Year 5.
